2024 UPDATE: Check directly with the host to ensure there is enough snow for the activity.

Here, the food is warm, the drinks roll out, and everyone has a good time.

If you’re looking for the best après ski spots for your snowy weekend getaway, keep reading. In this post, we’ll share three of the top ski resorts in Ontario with the perfect venues for an after-ski celebration!

Midland Cultural Centre announces opening of a new exhibit at the Gallery of Indigenous Art

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 12, 2023

Midland Cultural Centre (MCC) announces opening of a new exhibit at the Gallery of Indigenous Art

ToDoOntario - Midland Cultural Centre Gallery of Indigenous Art William Monague Exhibition

The MCC is pleased to announce that a new exhibit will be opening at the Midland Cultural Centre Gallery of Indigenous Art on Saturday, December 16, 2023. The upcoming featured exhibit at the MCC Gallery of Indigenous Art will be ‘Abwaudung: A Spiritual Journey’ – a William Monague retrospective, and will be open from December 16th, 2023 until March 1st, 2024.

William Monague (1956 – 2019) grew up with the People of Chimnissing on Christian Island. With no access to formal education or training in the arts, he was inspired by the traditional teachings of Mother Earth, the Spirit World and by the beauty of the Georgian Bay shores that surrounded him. This is the first exhibition of his artwork since his passing in October 2019.

This exhibition has been made possible through the generous loan of artworks from the William Monague family, private collectors, Georgian Bay Islands National Park, Christian Island Elementary School, Enaahtig Healing Lodge, the Martyrs’ Shrine, and the Simcoe County Museum. The MCC Gallery will proudly host this unique exhibition, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in Monague’s artistic legacy from December 16th, 2023, to March 1st, 2024.

“William Monague’s art brilliantly illuminates the profound beauty of Indigenous culture. Through each masterpiece, Monague invites us to walk the sacred path he tread, where the shores of Georgian Bay meet the echoes of ancestral wisdom,” says John Hartman, committee member. “His brush, guided by the unseen hands of heritage, leaves an indelible mark, reminding us that art is not just about what is created but the spirit it carries forward. In the tapestry of Indigenous art, William Monague’s contribution is a vibrant thread, weaving tales of resilience, connection, and the boundless power of creative expression.”

We invite you to join us in celebrating the opening of “Abwaudung: A Spiritual Journey” on Saturday, December 16th from 2 to 5pm at the Midland Cultural Centre Gallery of Indigenous Art.

For more information, please contact: Jess Klug at (705) 527-4420 or [email protected] or visit https://www.midlandculturalcentre.com/mccgallery

 About the Gallery

With programming and oversight by an Indigenous member majority committee, the MCC operates the Gallery of Indigenous Art focusing on work by artists and artisans of the Beausoleil First Nation and members of the Georgian Bay Métis community.

Best Places To Ice Skate Outdoors in Ontario

ToDoOntario - Winter Poster Series, Ice Skating

Carve out some winter fun in Ontario on an outdoor ice surface

Ice skating outdoors in fresh winter air is one of the most popular Canadian past times. But believe it or not, ice skating did not start in Canada.

Ice Skating is believed to have actually started in Scandinavia more than 2000 years ago. Skating began as a means of transportation. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia the word ‘skate’ likely comes from the German word ‘shake’ meaning shank. The first skate ‘blades’ were not made of metal, but of animal shank bone.  The history of skates in Canada can be traced back to the French in the 1600’s and to the Iroquois peoples before that.

Unique & Cool Skating Locations That Are Outside

ToDoOntario, skates on the Ottawa Canal

What is most exciting is that these surfaces are so neat – you can skate on historic sites, through parks, on mountain tops and the most unique – on a cranberry bog! Do not forget to bring your camera. These are memories in the making and the scenery is perfect for social media friendly snaps! That being said, remember to be safe and aware of yourself and other skaters. Don’t get in the way of other skaters, it could get dangerous.

Best Places to Skate in Ontario

From the more modern days of shinny on the pond to the newest craze of skating trails, there has always been a quest for the best outdoor ice.

Today you can find ice surfaces all over from commercial setups to backyard DIY’s. People love to skate and play hockey, do figure skating, race or just plain hold hands and glide. Skating is definitely a beloved activity for people of all ages. Ontario has a long list of skate trails, ODR’s (Outdoor rinks), municipal skating rinks that offer anyone a chance to get out and skate near them or while on a getaway.
