Activities To Do (From Home) On Earth Day

Earth Day Activities To Celebrate and Make Change On Earth Day

To Do Ontario, Swirly Planet Earth

Earth Day is April 22. BE A PART OF THE CHANGE

Earth Day was founded by Wisconsin Sen. Gaylord Nelson as a national day to recognize how a consumptive way of life was polluting the air, earth and water. The first Earth Day, was held on April 22, 1970.

This has long been a day where we reflect on our personal actions and make changes in our methods and ways so that together, all these actions make a big difference to creating sustainable living on the earth for generations to come. If anything, I hope the effect is that more actions and deeds are done by  the people staying at home.

Many important environmental events have happened on Earth Day since 1970, including the recent signing of the Paris Agreement, as Earth Day continues to be a momentous and unifying day each and every year.

Earth Week Will Also See Multiple Days Of Climate Action

On Earth Day, April 22, global activists, international leaders, and influencers will come together for the second-annual multi-hour Earth Day Live.

From the EarthDay.org press release:

“EARTHDAY.ORG along with lead organizers Education International, Hip Hop Caucus, and Earth Uprising are organizing three separate parallel climate action summits on April 20 and 21 ahead of the Biden Administration’s global leaders’ climate summit. The parallel summits are focused respectively on climate literacy, environmental justice, and a broad range of youth-led climate-focused issues. Earth Week will also bring thousands of groups and millions of voices together to stand up for climate action and bring awareness to humanity’s greatest existential threat. On Earth Day, EARTHDAY.ORG will bring together its partners, activists, educators, researchers, musicians, artists, influencers and more for its second-annual Earth Day Live”.

What can you do to celebrate Earth Day at home?

ToDoOntario, Earth Day Activities To Do From Home

Here are 3 easy-peasy activities for you ‘To Do’:

  1. Pick up garbage. Walk your street, the park, your ditch – anywhere! Bring a garbage bag(s), wear gloves and get cleaning! Remember to keep social distance rules in place AND if you find anything suspect, like a syringe, do not pick it up, call your city or municipality for them to clean it up safely. Be sure to separate garbage and recycling. The other obvious thing to do here for some people is, stop leaving garbage where it doesn’t belong.
  2. Backyard birding. Grab a seat, sit quietly and watch and count the birds around you and your home. Check out this Birding Bingo card from the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre! Click on the image a printable copy.

“And I’m helping you on the soul planet
And you’re helping me on the soul planet
And the animals and trees on the soul planet
They’re all you and me on the soul planet
There’s a slow stream of power on the soul planet
And the power is love on the soul planet
And the wind is music on the soul planet
Screaming through space, we’re screaming through space”

It doesn’t have to be a big or an expensive thing, because this last year, we’ve learned it’s all about the little things like a face-to-face visit or even a contact hug.

Little Girl Mom Tattoo

Spending Time with Mom these days is extra special. Depending on the age of the children. Grown up kids have not maybe seen their Moms in a long time and Moms of young children have have extra extra time.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas Mom Is Guaranteed to Love

Tasty Take-Out Mother’s Day Dinners &  Curb-Side Pick Up Meals

ToDoOntario - Ontario Resorts TakeOut

Fast food or fine dining. If you aren’t living with mom, maybe this is something you can pick up curb-side and leave on her doorstep. If she lives far away, maybe you can order it for her and surprise her with a ‘surprise map’ to the resort to pick it up.

Now is the time to get creative, and make the best of a challenging situation.Depending on where you live, you can likely pick-up take out food curb-side, local to you. For Mom’s with little kids, maybe let Mom have the house to herself while you and the family go get her meal…(and take your time!). March Break In Ontario Delayed To April

Updated: Ontario-wide 4 week lock down stay-home order starts April 3, 2021. It’s time for parents to reach into their bag of tricks for at-home and in-town activities. Stay tuned as we put some things ‘to do’ together into a special blog. As the lock down is not a total surprise, businesses are having to open/close/modify their operations daily. To keep busy, the best you can do is find things to do at home, and watch your local activity operators or safe and reasonable things to do in your town/city.

The Coronavirus and 2021 throw yet another curveballs to parents and school children in Ontario.

ToDoOntario - Township of Algonquin Highlands, snowman building contest

On February 11 the Ontario Minister of Education has announced that March Break has been moved to April

“In support of our collective efforts to keep schools safe, we are postponing March break until April 12-16, 2021. This decision was made with the best advice of Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health and public health officials, including consultations with many local Medical Officers of Health.” – Stephen Lecce, Ontario’s Minister of Education

The decision is precaution based on advice from health experts, including the province’s Science Table and the Chief Medical Officer of Health, to help protect against the emerging COVID-19 variants of concern.

This will be right on the heels of Easter weekend. So far there are not any Easter events planned to support social distancing and not encourage group gatherings and activities. You can however, have a staycation in your region with any of these Easter getaway packages or April getaway packages

Don’t forget, it’s also maple season! There are a few activities that may be in your region for some sweet outdoor fun.

Recommended March Break Travel Plans: Stay Local!

With respect to travel, the government’s position on this is unchanged. Ontarians should refrain from travelling, particularly given the increase in new variants that pose a direct risk to our province.

They continue to ask that you please stay at home as much as possible and continue following the direction of regional public health officials so that we can keep schools open and protect our seniors, frontline health workers and all families.

How to Shuck Oysters at Home

ToDoOntario - tray of oysters on the half shell

In 2019, Denmark was ranked as the number one place that was capturing oysters, but other than fine dining restaurants that serve them, how easy is it to enjoy oysters in your home?

For Canadians, we all know the coasts give us oysters that are out of this world delicious. Here, in Ontario, you can get fresh P.E.I. (Prince Edward Island) oysters in many local grocery stores.

Prince Edward Island oysters were declared the most delicious in the world at the Paris World’s Fair of 1900. Their salty delicious fresh flavours of the East Coast of Canada can’t be beat. P.E.I. oyster cultivators by name found here in Ontario stores are Malpeques, Colville Bay, Raspberry Point, Lucky Lime, Blackberry Point, Pickle Point and more. These names are related to the areas they come from. Most of them also offer website e-commerce and will ship oysters directly to your home.

Many of the these oyster cultivators have been in operation for generations, and it shows in the quality of their product.

If you’re looking for things to do at home on Valentine’s Day, oyster shucking can be one of the most unique and memorable experiences for you to share with a partner.

But how do you shuck oysters? With practice, oyster shucking at home can be easy.

Buy the Perfect Oysters

First, you’ll have to make sure that you buy the right oysters. You can get oysters from P.E.I. in Ontario from the grocery store at the fresh seafood counters. Since they’re healthy to eat, don’t be shy or worry about calories. Oysters can be considered expensive, but really, when you consider their value, it’s a fair price to pay, plus, it’s something ‘to do’!

ToDoOntario - grocery store oyster counter

ToDoOntario – grocery store oyster counter

Many people think that the size is what makes a difference in how difficult they are to shuck, but it really has more to do with the shape, thickness, and shell.

You can purchase a decent oyster knife at kitchen supply stores that will get the job done, and also be safe. This is always a good tool to keep in your kitchen arsenal.

You should try to find an oyster that has a uniform shape and a good angle at the hinge. Try and stay away from some that are warped. You may also want to find ones that have a sturdier shell.

Insert the Knife and Twist

Pick up an oyster and hold the oyster with the flatter side of the shell facing upwards. Use a folded kitchen towel to work on and keep from sliding around. Use the other end of the towel to protect your hand.

ToDoOntario - oyster shucker knife

Once you find the hinge, you should take your knife and slide it between the shells right near the hinge. A lot of people tend to shove it in the hinge, but this can be hard to do.

Slide the Knife Through the Two Shells

Once you’ve slid the knife through the two shells, make sure that you keep it at the bottom of the top shell.

The knife should slide very easily, but once you get to the hinge, you might find that you’ll get a little bit of resistance. Make sure you don’t use a lot of force because you don’t want to ruin the oyster shell and get shell inside with the juice and meat. Remember to always be careful and use part of the kitchen towel to also protect your hand if the knife should slip.

Open the Oyster

Once you manage to cut open the hinge, you then separate the two shells. First, take off the top shell. There might still be a little bit of meat attached to it, but you can easily just scrape that off into the other half to eat it, do not waste it.  Toss the top shell away. We keep a large bowl on the counter for all the discarded shells.

You should also make sure you take your knife and run it along the edge of the bottom shell. This will make sure that there is nothing sticking up that might hurt you while you’re eating the oyster.

While you’re doing all of this, make sure that you keep the oyster’s liquid inside as much as possible and frequently wipe your knife so you don’t get grit or shells pieces inside the oyster.

How To Serve & Eat Your Oysters

Oysters on the half shell should be placed and served on crushed ice, or here in Ontario we use snow!

ToDoOntario - backyard oyster bar

Oysters are delicious au naturel, but part of the fun is creating and enjoying an oyster bar full of flavours that enhance and balance that of the oyster. Fresh lemons are the first necessity and they help balance and cut the super saltiness of the oyster. If you like to spice things up, the next topping to consider is Tabasco sauce.

With Google’s help, there are a ton of other toppings, our favourite is the mignonette. A tart mix of wine vinegar and shallots that brighten the briny flavours of the sea, with a bit of a kick.

Be sure to tell us what your favourite is and how you eat your oysters.

This is sometimes the best part to enjoy during your romantic Valentine’s Day in.

Family Day Weekend In Ontario 2021

Monday February 15 is family day in Ontario. This is not a federal statutory holiday.

ToDoOntario - snow family

Ontario Family Day celebrates family values and gives people in Ontario a long weekend to encourage more special family time. Family Day is not observed by all of Canada, but only in New Brunswick, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and in British Columbia.

Whether you live in Toronto, or in Ottawa, a big town or a small town – pretty much all of Ontario is family-friendly. While we’ve been staying home for months now, I think it’s fair to say we’ve honed in family activities by now.

2020 Family Day looked and felt a lot different last year. Coronavirus was what seemed a far off mention not yet affecting our lives too much. 2021 Family Day is the opposite and lands during a provincial lockdown and global pandemic. Events, inside activities and even outdoor activities are greatly affected and/or cancelled.

You are likely sick of board games and scavenger hunts by now, and perhaps even, of each other but this is still a time to be together. This is still not the time to attend an event, or leave your home and general area. ToDoOntario supports the government orders to stay home and follow direction responsibly.

These are stay home family day activities, or nearby. Please do not travel outside your region, there are plenty of things to this family day to fill the whole February long weekend. If you go out to do outdoor activities remember to continue to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Eat Like A Tourist Locally

If you have a tourism business in your city or town that is closed for regular activities due to the lockdown and you’re also sick of cooking, then this is your lucky day. Read the “Ontario Resorts Takeout” blog and find where you can get some amazing hotel-kitchen-near-you cooked meals in your home. Some of Ontario’s most popular resorts are serving up some pretty amazing curbside pickup menus and special meals.

Snowshoe or Cross Country Ski

Depending on where you live, and only there, there may be ski operators with open trails for snowshoeing and cross country skiing. In many cases rentals are not available during the pandemic restrictions so this is an activity for those with equipment for the most part, or until lockdown measures are eased. Locals parks, municipal trails and some Ontario parks are also open for locals to enjoy.

Plan A Casual Spring Or Summer Trip

If we can work on keeping covid rate down then spring and summer weekends or day trips might be a thing again.

Many resorts and accommodations offer and promise money-back guarantees if that’s not the case, so why not look ahead and dream of better days.

Keep it casual, now is not the time to plan that dream vacation you’ve been deprived of or longing for. Find a low-key package with an activity you would love to do and take joy in something simple. Find more information about spring and summer vacation packages in Ontario here,

Fun Online Programs To Do While Under Quarantine

While you are safe at home, sick or not, abiding quarantine and self isolation rules can be tough. It can all seem smooth and easy at times (time to clean, time to bake, time to Netflix) and then in a moment turn challenging and bottom-out lonesome. It feels like the list is long with lots to do and yet nothing to do at the same time. Getting through this is easier if we are keeping busy while having fun.

Usually we do this by going out and attending various events or workshops, but now all of those in-person activities are cancelled and on hold. There is good news and that is that a few of the awesome Ontario businesses out there, who miss you too, are sharing some of their in-house content ONLINE.

This online activity content is great for kids or for adults. I know I’ve been doing a lot of ‘kids’ activities while I’ve been home, like drawing, video games and colouring. This type of organized content is there for you at any time to fit your weird new at-home schedule and it lets you forget about having to plan one more (bleeping) thing you have to do, and relieve some stress. The best unexpected perk is that for a wee span of time you can remember what it was like before the pandemic and connect to a world outside your bubble.

I did round up a few quaran-tivities below for you to check out, and make sure you read it all, I’ve included a little bonus activity at the end (it includes peeping and spying!).

Be sure to let me know what you think, or if I missed something super cool! – Jeanine @ ToDoOntario.com
